Fuel stability, bio alcohols and microorganisms

As we already explained in our chapter about Octane Booster, fuels have gone through a profound change in the last 30 years, the most problematic step for internal combustion engines beeing the massive addition of ethanol and other bio-components. These all are alcohols and alcohols are highly hygroscopic, meaning they attract water, which causes a cascade of negative impacts on fuel and car(-parts). First, the collected water condenses on the inside of the tank and causes corrosion, if the tank is made of sheet metal. The real problem starts when the fuel stays in the tank for days or weeks. Water is the ideal ground for bacteria and sponges. These microorganisms now begin to convert the alcohol into acetic acid, a highly corrosive component harming not only the tank, but the entire fuel system it flows through. The conversion needs oxygen, which is supplied by the tank ventilation, even more when the fuel swaps around while driving. Acetic acid develops even without bacteria and sponges – needing only the presence of oxygen and little more time.

So the first negative effect of bio-alcohols is the building of highly corrosive components. The second one is obvious: the alcohols – added to the fuel to ensure its ignition capability – are converted and the fuel looses its ingnition capability. Not only will the engine have problems starting with fuel stored in the tank for a longer period, but also faces very poor combustion – leading to performance loss, increased consumption and a lot more emissions.
Conclusion: modern petrol/gasoline fuel isn’t stable – the alcohol components convert within a short time and lead to forced corrosion of the entire fuel system and reduced or even lost ignition capability.
