Octane rating, knock resistance and lead substitute
Depending on specific country regulations, leaded fuel was largely common until the mid-80s. The lead ensured the valve seat lubrication and was used to raise the octane rating and the knock resistance. Since then, other components took over the least two functions, but the lubrication was dropped. Even though, the whole chemical structure of fuel changed over the years, with a massive addition of ethanol and bio-fuels in the last decade. Of course the technology of internal combustion engines also evolved, but the principle remained the same – with the same basic requirements on fuel. Modern engines with their knock sensors are more tolerant to varying octane ratings and feature hardened valve seats to overcome the dropped lubrication – but to operate at peak performance and efficiency without unnecessary wear, they highly profit from quality fuels with high octane rating and some basic lubrication. Old engines without catalytic converters on the other hand absolutely call for stable, knock resistant fuels with lubricating components. Of course it’s possible to convert the cylinder head / the valve seats to withstand unleaded fuel, but it’s costly and even then there’s the whole engine layout designed for leaded fuel – with high compression, no knock sensors and laborious manual adjustment of the ignition timing to meet lower octane ratings.
What happens when driving a fuel with too low octane rating? The perfomance output drops and the combustion temperature rises – if the ignition timing is not adjusted accordingly (by knock sensors or manually), even a capital engine failure can occur. The combustion exceeds a certain temperature and burns holes into the pistons. So, what can you do in confrontation with the varying fuel qualities of today?
